Saturday Fashion Camp: Design Your Own Dresses!
Dressmaking for Girls Up to Size 12

A self-paced, ongoing series of 1-day camps (3 hours each) teaching fashion enthusiasts how to combine technical skills and creativity. It's a fun way to learn the creative skills for turning a fashion idea into a finished garment.  Students will practice basic technical and creative skills, including patternmaking, for turning their ideas into dresses and clothes they can wear.

Here’s what you get to do when you design your own dress:

  • Make a design plan. Choose the design details for your dress, such as overall style lines, sleeve style, neckline, skirt. Then add extras such as pockets, trims or other decorations.
  • Make a technical drawing of your dress design; then draft the pattern for your new dress and its details!
  • Make a pattern that fits just you. First, make a fitting muslin; then draft your new pattern from your fitting sample.
  • Shop for and choose your fabrics and notions.
  • Sew your dress! You will be free to work on your own at home with help from an adult or sewing teacher, using the sewing order guide;  or bring your pattern to our Saturday Sewing camps, on alternate Saturdays

This class uses a textbook: The Building Block Dress: A Sewing Pattern Alteration Guide by Liesl Gibson. It includes a set of pattern templates in toddler sizes up to girls’ size 12.

Who's Eligible:  Creative kids ages 9-12

Schedule: Design Camps will be on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of each month at 1-4pm; February camps are Feb 10 & 24
These camps are self-paced, just like our regular Sewing Camps; therefore students may begin at any time. and attend whatever sessions their schedules allow. The first three Design Camps follow an important orientation process
and should be attended as close together as possible.  This will allow students to quickly become independent in their classwork as well as at home.
