Sewing Classes for Adults

Class Descriptions

 Sewing Basics I

The Basics I course is a set of six (6) classes designed to get you comfortable with a sewing machine and teach you pattern layout, cutting, essential construction skills and finishing techniques.

Choose your own project! The first class will include a full orientation on supplies, a discussion on the type of project you would like to do (clothing, home décor, quilting, crafts, etc.), and an introduction to the sewing machine.  Remaining classes will be spent completing an easy pattern project of your choice.
At the end of the Basics I class you will have the skills to take off on your own sewing adventures; but since beginning level sewing is much broader than just these basics, you may choose to sign up for additional sets of classes – known as Sewing Basics II: Supervised Sewing – until you feel confident enough to work on your own.

Please be sure to read our class policies before committing to a class time.

Who's Eligible:
  Ages 21+

Schedule:
Since these are self-paced classes, you may join any class that has open spaces.  You are welcome to arrange any set of class times to fit your own schedule, as classroom space allows. Empty classes are subject to cancellation within 24 hours of their start time, so it's a good idea to reserve your class times as much in advance as possible.  And this reminder  . . .  Your class expires 6 months after your 1st class, so don't lose the value of your sewing course, by putting off your classes!

January 2017 classes will begin the week of January 9 and will be offered in the mornings (10am-noon) and evenings (7:30-9:30pm) on Monday through Thursday and on Saturday mornings (10am-noon).

Cost:
$175* for a set of six (6) classes

*Additional costs will include fabrics, patterns, and sewing supplies.
Personal Sewing Machine Orientation

You got a new sewing machine and took it out of the box, so now what?  Bring it in with all its parts and user manual for a private orientation on how to thread it, maintain it, and use all its bits and pieces.

Note:  No sewing skills are taught in this session - only how to thread your machine and operate its features.
Try our Adult Basics I classes to learn sewing machine operation and basic sewing skills.

Schedule:  Saturdays after 4PM (call to schedule)

Cost: $50 for the first hour and $15 for each additional ½ hour

Our New Fast Start Classes

Fast Start on the Sewing Machine
~  Now Available !!  Call us for the schedule  ~

Learn what it's like to use a sewing machine before investing in one.  In 3 hours you'll learn how to thread it up and sew a straight line.  We will then teach secrets about handling the machine that normally takes forever to figure out on your own.  And in the process of getting comfortable with the sewing machine, you will make a large drawstring bag to show for the effort!

This Fast Start class is designed to take the mystery out of the sewing machine and get you up and sewing fast.
In just one class you'll learn how to:
  • Operate a sewing machine and thread it correctly
  • Sew straight lines
  • Construct the basic seam allowances
  • Finish seams
  • Topstitch like an expert
By the end of class, you'll have an attractive drawstring tote bag to prove you know how to sew!

This class is designed to start you out right on your way to becoming a sewing genius, or at least a fanatic, which is  more fun. You'll come away knowing the basic principles of threading the machine, working the controls, selecting stitches, sewing straight lines and curves and sewing basic seams. There won't be time to teach specific sewing techniques - that's covered in our Sewing Basics I and II classes - but you will be ready to work with your own machine and start developing your new sewing skills.

There's no need to bring anything to class.  Supplies are included in the class fee. Bring a friend or two . . .  It's the perfect Girls' Night Out activity!

Who's Eligible:  Ages 18+

Schedule:  These 3-hr classes are single sessions designed to be attended only on the days reserved and paid for.

Please be sure to read our class policies before committing to a class time.

Cost:  $95 covers the class fee, use of machines and all supplies
Payment in full is required to complete the registration process and reserve your space.
Fast Start on the Serger
This class is not in our current schedule - please call for details  ~

A single 3-hour class to get familiar with threading and operating a basic serger

There's a definite learning curve to using a serger, but no serious sewing room is complete without one. It's a must for sewing knits and giving a professional finish to all your sewing projects.

This 3-hour class takes the mystery and frustration out of learning to use a serger.
Build your confidence with using a basic overlock machine/serger.
Learn to thread it and set it up for 2, 3 or 4-thread functions
Get plenty of practice time to develop accuracy in this new sewing skill.
Includes threading the machine with ease, setting it up for 1-needle or 2-needle overlock stitching and for narrow rolled hems.

Take your sewing skills to the next level and make the serger a part of your sewing lifestyle!

~  Some things to consider for taking the Fast Start on the Serger class ~

Scope of this class:
This class covers only the basic functions on a basic overlock machine, or serger.  Please note that machines using 5-thread functions, the cover stitch and chain stitch are not introduced in this class. These will be addressed in an advanced session in the future.

THIS CLASS HAS A PRE-REQUISITE. Sewing beginners can definitely learn to use a serger, but you must have some proficiency and familiarity with a sewing machine in order to get full value from the class.

“Proficiency” includes:

1) Ability to thread up and operate a sewing machine without assistance and

2) Experience with basic sewing construction by having completed at least a few easy sewing projects.

We want you to get the most value from our classes, so please feel free to give us a call if you are unsure if this is right for you. For liability reasons, you must be over 18 to attend this class.

Attendance Policy:  This course is not part of our series of flexible class schedules. The "Fast Start on the Serger" class must be attended as scheduled and on the date purchased. There are no refunds or make-ups for missed classes or no-shows. Please be sure of your schedule before signing up for this class.
